Mahya Tolukian is an Persian painter and illustrator. She earned her bachelor's degree in graphics and her master's degree in illustration from Tehran University of Art. Her interest in incorporating calligraphy into her artwork began during her high school years when she studied graphics.
One of the most distinctive features of Mahya Tolukian's works is her use of calligraphy. However, she not only explores the form of calligraphy but also emphasizes the concepts conveyed through it.
Regarding the presence of letters and calligraphy in her works, Tolukian aims to view them differently. With a formalistic approach, she separates calligraphy from its primary practical basis, i.e., legibility, and directs it towards an abstract space, attempting to create a visual identity for the calligraphy. She considers her works to be abstract painting, with the difference that the letters play a vital role of a visual element.
The most important specification in this painter, calligrapher, and University teacher's artworks is exposing her visual power in Farsi script And letters. She believes different kind of Persian script specially Nastaliqu and Broken Nastaliq Scripts have very high level of capability in innovation and creating new forms in letters. While creating her artworks, Mahya ignores traditional rules to reach a newer and more unique style. She creates a complex yet subtle art by combining traditional art form in a contemporary style.
